If you're looking for a sporty electric SUV that's fun to drive, you may want to learn more about the 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E and the 2022 Tesla Model Y, two of the best models on the market. Both the Mustang Mach-E and the Tesla Model Y have a variety of impressive capabilities, an expansive range, and plenty of great features.

Purchasing an E-SUV is a great way to make your commute more eco-friendly, but it sometimes can be a challenge to find out which option is best for you. That's why our team at Sioux Falls Ford put together this comparison. Keep reading to explore the details of the Mach-E and the Model Y and how they compare.

Engine and Performance

Ford's Mustang Mach-E packs a punch with 266 horsepower and 600 pound-feet of torque, or up to 480 horsepower and 634 pound-feet of torque, making it one of the highest-performing Mustangs the automaker has ever produced. With plenty of muscle and power, the Mach-E is excellent for navigating busy city streets and highways. Easy handling and braking help to ensure you have a smooth ride, no matter where you're going.

Tesla's Model Y isn't too far behind, pumping out an estimated 456 horsepower and 497 pound-feet of torque. Like the Mach-E, the Model Y has a single rear electric motor, single-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive. While the Tesla Y has a lot of power, it doesn't quite match the Mach-E when it comes to handling. Though its acceleration is also excellent, it isn't nearly as smooth or refined as the Mach-E. The Mach-E also offers two drivetrain options and many different powertrain options, while the Model Y has one drivetrain option and two powertrain options.

Specs and Features

Both vehicles seat a total of five, but when it comes to passenger space and roominess, the Mach-E narrowly beats the Model Y with plenty of space for taller passengers and extra cargo. With nearly 30 cubic feet of cargo space that nearly doubles when the rear seats are folded, the Mach-E is spacious and practical. The Model Y has about the same amount of space, along with the option to seat up to seven passengers by adding a third row, but this comes at a steeper price.

The Mach-E's steering wheel is a bit larger and easier to turn than the Model Y's, while the seats are slightly more cushioned and comfortable. Its cabin is airy and modern, while the interior of the Model Y is more minimalist. The Mach-E's GT model comes standard with a black-painted roof, while the top trim allows you to upgrade to all white. A flip-up armrest on the center console makes it easier to store extra items between the front passenger seats. Several other features help increase passenger comfort, including customizable ambient lighting, a panoramic sunroof, and wireless charging.

The Model Y features an all-glass roof, which is perfect for soaking in the sunlight. Standard features include heated front seats and 12-way power-adjustable seats. There aren't nearly as many interior features in the Model Y as the Mach-E, but it contains Tesla's unique autopilot semi-autonomous driving system and several advanced safety and driver-assistance features, like automated emergency braking.

Technology and Infotainment

Ford is known for customizing its infotainment system to match each driver's experience, and the Mach-E is no different. The vertically mounted 15.5-inch touchscreen includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, so you can stay connected without needing to take your eyes off the road. Also included are a Wi-Fi hotspot and two USB ports, one at the front of the vehicle and one at the rear. FordPass Connect makes it easy to operate your phone as a key without carrying around a physical one. Ford also rolls out updates to its infotainment system over time, adding apps and content.

Despite having a similar-sized touchscreen, the Model Y doesn't have the same infotainment capabilities as the Mach-E and lacks Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Its large, slim display manages just about every function, which adds convenience but can also make adjusting the climate settings more difficult, especially for people who aren't used to using a touchscreen. Like the Mach-E, the Model Y contains a Wi-Fi hotspot, two USB ports, and standard navigation.

Trims

The Mach-E contains four trim levels. The base-level trim, Select, is already packed with value, featuring 18-inch aluminum wheels, LED taillights, and Ford's comprehensive suite of driver aids and safety features. Next in line is the California Route 1 trim, which extends the range slightly and adds a feature enabling the vehicle to park itself. The Premium trim adds a 10-speaker audio system and a panoramic roof, while the GT trim adds 20-inch aluminum wheels and adaptive suspension.

The Model Y doesn't have the selection to choose from, with only two trim levels: Range and Performance. The Range trim focuses on the Model Y's range and features the latest Tesla software and 19-inch wheels. As its name implies, the Performance trim focuses on maximizing performance, adding 21-inch wheels and lowered suspension to make acceleration even faster.

Battery and Range

There are two battery options on the Mach-E: standard range and extended range. The Mach-E's standard range features 70 kilowatt-hours of usable battery capacity that will get you 247 miles, shorter than the Model Y's standard range of 318 miles and 75kWh of battery capacity, but more than enough for a daily commute or shorter road trip. You also have the option to go up to bump up capacity to 91 kWh for a total of 314 miles.

The battery in the Mach-E is located under the floor of the car, making it easier to maximize cargo and passenger space. In the Model Y, the battery is also below the floor pan.
