You may remember the Maverick name from a car line in the 1970s, but this time Ford brings back the name for its latest small pickup truck. The 2022 model year is the introductory year for the all-new Ford Maverick, a sub-compact truck built on the same platform as the Escape and Bronco Sport. If you want the versatility of a truck, but don't necessarily need all of the capabilities and power offered by mid-size or full-size versions, then the 2022 Ford Maverick is a perfect choice. To get to know the new 2022 Ford Maverick's pricing, specs, and trim levels, read our brief overview.

Available Trim Levels

The 2022 Ford Maverick will be available in three trim levels: XL, XLT, and Lariat. The base XL offers 17-inch steel wheels and LED headlights and makes an excellent work truck with bare-bones options. The XLT comes with 17-inch aluminum wheels, power exterior side mirrors, and a power lock for the tailgate. Offering more features at an affordable price, the XLT is the value-oriented Maverick that will appeal to most drivers. The high-end Lariat rolls down the road on 18-inch bright aluminum wheels with a power-sliding rear window, LED headlights, and a cargo lamp LED, integrated with an LED center high-mounted stop lamp.

Optional Packages

The First Edition package comes with a black roof, body-color door handles, unique graphics, a soft tonneau cover for the bed, and unique wheels. The FX4 package can be added to the all-wheel-drive XLT and Lariat, adding more off-road capabilities with suspension tuning, additional drive modes, all-terrain tires, and underbody protection. The 4K Towing package adds a trailer hitch receiver with a seven-pin trailer wiring harness and upgraded powertrain cooling to set you up to haul everything you need for a weekend of fun and adventure.

Power

The standard powertrain for all three trim levels of the 2022 Ford Maverick is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a hybrid system to deliver a combined output of 191 horsepower and 155 pound-feet of torque. This engine is paired with a continuously variable automatic transmission that powers the front wheels. You can opt for a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that garners 250 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive is available when you go with the 2.0-liter engine, giving you better control over various road and weather conditions.

Performance

The 2022 Ford Maverick offers impressive fuel efficiency with the hybrid engine with an EPA-estimated rating of 42 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway. Even the turbocharged four-cylinder gets an estimated 23/20 with FWD and 22/29 for AWD. The hybrid engine offers a zero-to-60 of just under eight seconds, while the 2.0-liter did it in just under six seconds. You can expect to tow 2,000 pounds with the hybrid engine and 4,000 pounds with the 250 horsepower engine.

Exterior

With a payload of 1,512 to 1,564 pounds, the Maverick's FLEXBED Cargo Box,  4.5-foot bed adds clever solutions to maximize the space to accommodate your payload. The cargo box comes with slots stamped into the side of the bed to allow you to install dividers to create cargo racks, elevated floors, and segmented storage. You'll also find two tie-downs that double as bottle openers, threaded holes, and four D-rings, all built right into the cargo box for ease of use. Finally, the bed features integrated 12-volt electrical outlets and an available 110-volt household-style outlet to provide you with all the power you need.

Interior

The attention to detail on the interior design of the 2022 Ford Maverick makes it comfortable and convenient for drivers and passengers alike. The XL comes with power windows, rear under-seat storage compartments, a six-speaker stereo, a Wi-Fi hot spot, and an 8-inch touch screen complete with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration. Moving up to the XLT adds upgraded upholstery, a rear-center armrest with cupholders, and cruise control.

The Lariat comes standard with proximity keyless entry with push-button start, dual-zone automatic climate control, simulated leather upholstery, a power-adjustable driver's seat, and two rear USB ports. You can also add the Lariat Luxury package which adds two household-style power outlets, an upgraded infotainment interface with Ford's Sync 3, a wireless charging pad, Bang & Olufsen premium sound system, and heated seats and steering wheel.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

Ford knows that safety is a top priority for drivers when it comes to purchasing a vehicle and has added a plethora of standard and available safety and driver-assistance features to the Maverick to help keep you and your passengers safe. Standard features include a high-strength frame, an advanced airbag system, automated emergency braking, and forward-collision mitigation to warn you of a possible impending collision and apply the brakes in some scenarios.

You can add the Ford Co-Pilot360 package to get a blind-spot monitor that alerts you when a vehicle is in the lane next to you and lane-keeping assist, which steers the Maverick back into its lane if you begin to drift over the lane markers. You can also get adaptive cruise control, which automatically adjusts the speed to keep a specified distance between you and the vehicle in front of you.
