Exterior Appearance
The 2022 Ford Escape continues the body styling introduced in 2020 and has undergone no significant exterior changes. It also continues the low and wide body stance along with the longer wheelbase. The trim levels for the Escape include the following:
- S.
- SE.
- SEL.

Engines and Drivetrains
The 2022 Ford Escape has multiple powertrains available that meet just about everyone's driving needs. The base engine is a 1.5-liter gasoline-powered three-cylinder engine paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. More power is available in the form of a 250-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, a gasoline-powered engine with the same transmission.
The fuel economy rating for the 1.5-liter engine is 27 mpg city and 33 mpg highway.
Two hybrid engine options are available, with one being a plug-in. Both hybrids consist of a 2.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine that is boosted by an electric motor. The plug-in version of the hybrid comes with an 11.2 kWh battery pack that can propel the car for an estimated 37 miles when in battery-only mode. The actual mileage when using only the battery depends on driving conditions and acceleration.
The Escape has five selectable drive modes: normal, eco, sport, slippery, and deep snow/sand to deliver the appropriate type of traction for any road condition. Both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive (AWD) versions are available, with AWD disconnect as an option. AWD disconnect disables the rear wheels when they're not needed for traction or propulsion and allows the front wheels to propel the vehicle.
Towing Capacity
The Titanium and SEL packages with the 2.0 EcoBoost engine give you the option to include a Class II Trailer Tow package. The gas-powered engines have a maximum towing capacity of 3,500 pounds. In comparison, the hybrid versions have a maximum towing capacity of 1,500 pounds. The standard engine can tow up to 2,000 pounds.
Interior Details
The cabin of the 2022 Ford Escape is nicely appointed and designed to look premium. It can comfortably carry five adults at the same time. All trim levels except the Titanium receive cloth or faux leather upholstery, while the Titanium has full-grain leather seats. The rear seats have 60/40 split-fold down and deliver a maximum legroom of 40.7-inches by sliding the rear seat back. The overall passenger volume is 103 cubic feet.
Infotainment System
Technology details include a 4.2-inch radio display with AM/FM radio in the base model S. From the SE trim level and above, you get an 8.0-inch touch-screen infotainment system with Ford's SYNC 3 infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay capability. Escapes equipped with SYNC 3 pair with a smartphone app to provide remote vehicle access for starting and other features. A heads-up pop-up display is available as an option.
USB ports and a Wi-Fi hotspot come standard, as does a six-speaker stereo system.

The 2022 Ford Escape has a five-star crash safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. This rating is due in part to the Ford Co-Pilot360 safety technology system, which includes:
Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking
This system consists of sensors that scan the roadway ahead of you and let you know of any potential collision with another vehicle or pedestrian. The brakes automatically apply the moment a potential collision is imminent.
Blind-Spot Information System (BLIS)
The BLIS detects and alerts you to vehicles in your blind spots while driving. A cross-traffic alert system detects traffic and objects behind you as you back out of your parking spot.
Active Park Assist 2.0
The active park assist helps you with parallel parking. It enables you to make your way out of a tight parking spot through lane guidance on the infotainment system screen.
Lane-Keeping System
The lane-keeping system consists of three systems that guide you back to the center of the lane when you drift. A lane-keeping alert makes the steering wheel vibrate if you're still wavering, and a driver alert goes off if you drift more than is safe.
