What the oil inside of your car does is act as a lubricant for all of the parts. After using the same oil for a while, the ingredients and molecules break down and become useless. You can still drive your car on no oil for a little bit but it's recommended it's used to drive to replace it.
Once there's the oil breaks down or you have no more, your engine parts start building friction which overheats your car. Getting scheduled oil changes can stop and prevent this from happening.
